Chapter Fourteen

Last night had been both fun and rough. Fun to hang out and create the giant clue board, but I felt so bad for Sawyer with what happened with Riley.

Today was a new day and I had the whole day off. This afternoon, we were going to Sunday dinner at Granny Ines and Aunt Rita’s house. I just hoped my awful Uncle, Aunt, and cousins weren’t there. I wasn’t in the mood for their snarky comments.

Uncle Sullivan “Sully” was my dad’s older brother. He was married to Gina for thirty-five years. They had two children, Nova and Sullivan Junior, but everyone called him Junior.

We hadn’t seen each other in a few months. Not since my Uncle Sully went off on my grandmother, aunt, and even brought me into it. It had been quite a memorable evening. Since then, we have avoided any time they would be at Granny’s house.

But they were out of town for a vacation or something, so it was the perfect time to go.

I was also off for the whole day today, which I was looking forward to. Vee and I were going hiking together, while Sawyer stayed behind to sleep and lick his wounds.

I threw on a pair of black leggings and one of Colt’s Neal Barney shirts. It was large on me, which I liked. Grabbing my shoes, I jogged down the stairs to meet Vee, but of course, I was first.

I filled our water bottles while I waited. It had been a while since I’d been able to go hiking and I couldn’t wait.

Finally, I heard her bouncing down the stairs.

“I’m so excited to have you going with me today.” Vee giggled.

“Me too.” I shoved a few granola bars into my bag. “Your car or mine?”

“I never get to drive, so can we take mine?”

“Sounds good.”

We headed out towards the state park. It would be hot and humid out today since it’s August, but thankfully the trails were shady with large oaks and dense pines. They stretched their branches together and across the paths to form these wonderful canopies.

“I haven’t been out here in so long.” I said as we started down one of the paths. This one should take us around the lake. It was roughly three miles.

“This is my favorite place.” Vee smiled, stretching her legs to keep up with me.

“Do you want me to slow my pace?”

“No, I’m used to keeping up with Sawyer and you aren’t quite as fast as him.”

“Should I be insulted by that?” I laughed.

“Ha, no, not at all.”

We walked for a while in silence. I watched the birds flitting through the trees, squirrels run across the path in front of us before scurrying up trees on the opposite side. It was therapeutic to be out here.

It gave me time to reflect on everything going on. First, we had Colt’s murder. Never having met him in person, it was weird getting to know him through this investigation. We had so much in common.

It had me wondering about all the other people I had yet to meet in the world.
